In addition to the rodeo education, students will also be involved in fun activities which will allow them a chance to explore a part of Central Oregon or cool off from the hot summer heat. (In 2009, students hiked up Smith Rock, played in a 150 foot slip and slide, and enjoyed an afternoon at Haystack Reservoir.) This is not a rigidly structured camp; therefore, there is a lot of room for modifying our daily schedule as needed. We fill our evenings with campfire visits, a "western" movie night, rodeo video education, and depending on the make-up of the group, a dummy roping jackpot or two!
Because this is a camp, not a clinic, students can choose to be here for the fun or to be pushed with tough workouts, more advanced education and put into pressure situations. Each camper has the opportunity to get out of camp exactly what they put into it.
It is also the discretion of the instructors as to the activities each camper is allowed to participate in depending on the level of the camper, the experience of both horse and rider and the safety of all persons involved. Simply by participating in the camp does not automatically allow all campers to rope live cattle from the box. However, we will provide as many opportunities as possible to help students advance to that goal.
Ryan and Karen Young are both school teachers and coaches who share a passion for rodeo and educating our youth. Karen was a WSHSRA Goat Tying Champion, 3-time NW Region NIRA Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping and All-Around Champion, 1995 2nd in the Nation at CNFR in Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping and Women's All-Around, 1996 4th in the Nation at CNFR in Breakaway Roping and top 10 finish in the Goat Tying. Ryan was a 2-time OSHSRA team roping champion and qualified 5 years for the CNFR in Team Roping, Calf Roping, and Steer Wrestling
